Guided imagery is a process that invites us to turn inward and connect to our intuition. It allows us to harness the power of the imagination in order to have a beneficial shift or healing experience in the mind. Importantly, because the mind and body are interconnected, these mental benefits are extended to the body and we can often physically feel a shift towards wellbeing. The imagery process can promote helpful perspectives, attitudes, and insights. It can assist us in discovering inner resources and strengths that are supportive and life-affirming. It can also help us to meet our challenges with clarity, trust, and resilience.

 

 

Guided imagery is a well-studied tool that has shown benefit to people including, but not limited to those experiencing stress, illness, or pain, those preparing for an important event (i.e. surgery, giving birth, a performance), or those wanting to cultivate their spirituality or inner life. It is helpful in decision-making, preparing for a challenging situation, reducing the effects of stress on the body, and supporting positive emotions like gratitude and joy.

 

 

In a guided imagery session, you are led through a simple guided relaxation exercise like deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, or mindfulness. Once in a relaxed state, you are guided to see or sense the images that come to mind, usually around a predetermined topic of interest. Guided imagery can be scripted, meaning that the images are chosen for you by the practitioner; however, in these sessions we use a more open-ended and self-directed form of imagery. This means that the unique images that arise for you, within the structure of a guided session, will be the main focus. You will be guided to experience any images, sounds, sensations, or feelings that arise from your own imagination and will have the opportunity to directly dialogue with them, learning from what comes up. After the guided imagery experience, you will have the opportunity to discuss insights, take-aways, and develop practical actions for applying what you’ve learned to your life.
